President Message
Welcome to the Somali Institute of Architects (SIA), the professional home for architects and built environment specialists dedicated to shaping a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for Somalia.
Since our establishment in 2023, SIA has been a beacon for creativity, innovation, and collaboration within the architectural community. Our mission extends beyond the practice of architecture, we are committed to playing a pivotal role in the urban reconstruction and development of Somalia’s urban fabric, which was profoundly impacted by decades of conflict.
The civil war not only devastated Somalia’s infrastructure but also fractured its social and cultural connections. As architects, we hold a profound responsibility to contribute to rebuilding environments that reflect the resilience, heritage, and aspirations of Somali communities. Through thoughtful design and sustainable urban planning, we can restore the cultural identity and strengthen the social cohesion of our cities and neighborhoods.
At SIA, we uphold values that champion excellence, inclusivity, collaboration, and sustainability. We actively promote professional development, research, and innovation in architecture, urban planning, and design. Our efforts are driven by a deep understanding that architecture is not merely about structures but about fostering a sense of belonging and purpose for communities.
Our Commitments
- Urban Reconstruction post-war: Working hand-in-hand with stakeholders to rebuild war-affected areas with resilience and sustainability at the forefront.
- Cultural Preservation: Safeguarding Somalia’s architectural heritage while integrating traditional techniques into modern designs.
- Capacity Building: Empowering Somali architects, designers, and urban planners through education, mentorship, and training.

We recognize that the challenges are vast, but so are the opportunities. The journey toward a more vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable Somalia requires collective action. We invite architects, professionals, institutions, and communities to join us in this transformative endeavor.
Together, we can harness the power of architecture to heal, inspire, and build a prosperous future for generations to come.
Thank you for your interest in SIA and your commitment to the future of Somalia’s built environment.

Background "Historical Timeline"
In 1990, Somalia entered a civil war, which led to the collapse of the country’s infrastructure and the loss of millions of lives. As a result, Somali society entered a state of coma and loss of memory. In pursuit of collective participation for reconstruction in the post-war recovery phase in Somalia, establishing the SIA was a guiding and participatory approach to sustainable urban reconstruction in strengthening cultural identity, community resilience, and social cohesion. Urban reconstruction is a complex process and is the biggest challenge facing post-war Somalia.
The institute aims to promote excellence and professionalism in architecture and related fields through various initiatives such as continuing professional development programs, seminars, workshops, and conferences. SIA also plays a significant role in advocating for policies and regulations that advance the architectural profession and enhance the quality of the built environment in Somalia post-war.
